Research

My underlying aim is to understand the role of social interaction and collaboration in learning, play and social cognitive development, and particularly how technology of all sorts can support communication and collaboration. Much of our work involves autistic children and families. We specialise in video analysis of interaction in natural settings.

Examples of projects include:

  • how augmented toys can increase children's cooperative play
  • how best to use tablet computers for collaborative learning and co-creation
  • developing our SCoSS software architecture to support adult-child communication
  • designing playground spaces to foster social play in autism
  • developing technological support to improve text comprehension instruction
  • developing new ways for digital voice assistants to support communication

I collaborate across disciplines (e.g. Informatics,  Linguistics, Education). My PhD students' work is showcased on the ChatLab website.
