Developing Capability in Professional Practice (L5090)

15 credits, Level 4

Spring and summer teaching

On this module, you'll build on the foundation laid in IPLD Part One and continue to develop essential academic and professional learning skills.

This module is designed to support your transition through the degree while offering a challenge. It's more than just a study skills module; it emphasises learning from feedback, evaluation and group work, encouraging you to connect theory, practice and personal development from the start.

You’ll begin by preparing for your 5-day shadowing placement and finish by presenting your readiness for professional practice to a panel that includes service users and carers. You’ll also compile a portfolio that demonstrates your participation in skills workshops focused on communication and time management, setting you up for placement in year two.

Portfolio contents include:

  • final self-evaluation tool and planning for level 2
  • evidence of learning application, including two bibliographies referencing other modules
  • small group-produced annotated bibliographies showing your ability to source academic materials through the electronic library
  • reflections from shadowing placements
  • evidence of a skills log completed during the year, focusing on communication skills
  • extracts from reflective learning journals.
